Unemployed and Looking for Work

When you are unemployed and looking for work, there are times when you might hear people say, "Why don't you go flip burgers?"  Sure.  No problems right?  Any one can get a job like that.  Back up.  Competition is there.  You need to be prepared.

Let's talk about the competition.  Networking has made it easier for employers to reach the masses near and far.  Your competition may no longer be your buddy Joe down the road.  It could be Joe, whom you've never met, from five states over.    All I can say is you better have a memorable answer when the employer interviewing you ask, "Why should I hire you when there are other's just as qualified who wants the job"?  It's an important question, because he or she is not just blowing smoke.  There are hundreds wanting that same job.  Your only solace, if you are sitting in an interview chair, then you are one of the lucky ones.  It doesn't mean you got the job, it means, out of all the applicants, you are being considered for hire.

I have been on both sides of the fence now.  When I had my job, I would think, if it were me looking for work, I could find a job anywhere.  Those people are just lazy and don't want to work.  They want to live off the system.  Wow.  Wake up call.  Most of those people make, if their lucky about $300 a week on their unemployment.  That's, if their lucky.  I knew someone who made a whole $97 a week.  I don't know about you, but I might be able to live high off the hog with $97 a week, if  I'm living in my car and I own that car free and clear.  Oh, wait, what about insurance?

Here are some tips for the unemployed and looking for work.

1. Network.  Reach out to friends and family, let them know your looking for work.
2. It's very important to stay in contact and work close with your local employment office.  Sign up for their classes, such as resume writing and tips for interviewing.  Search their website for jobs and job fair postings.  They receive hundreds of new job opportunities each day and they are a great advocate for the unemployed.
3. Consider applying at several temporary agencies.  Review their websites for jobs and call them weekly.
4. What helps me is to prepare for interviews.  How I do that is by having a list of possible questions and what my answers will be.  I also have a list all my accomplishments.  I study these before each interview.
5. Look over the companies website before your interview.
6. Think of at least two good questions to ask at the end of your interview.  It shows that you are interested in the company and what they do there.

Landing a job in this day and age is not impossible.  It just takes a little more work and effort then it use to.  At times it might wear on your self esteem.  Try to stay focused, know that being unemployed is only temporary and mostly, keep away from those who are quick to judge others.  They'll only bring you down and derail your concentration.

After you land that job, be an advocate for someone who's still looking.  You, more than most, know what it's like to be unemployed and looking for work.

Since Tom has been experiencing complications from his shoulder surgery, he has been having severe mood swings. I can't seem to escape the line of fire.

Our Tiny Apartment

I woke this morning to memories of a time when my oldest son Louie was about 16 months old.  It was 1983.  We were extremely poor but we were able to afford a tiny two room apartment that was infested with cockroaches.  The small apartment was nestled in a hotel that sat above an entire block which was located in the downtown area of Homedale Idaho.  People dubbed it the "Cockroach Hotel".

Although not fond of the fact that my son's first word was bug, it was a happy time for me.  Louie kept me busy and I loved spending all my time with my little boy.  We would go for walks around town, play at the park, go to the library or stop to visit one of his cousins.  We were inseparable.



Friends or family would ask me how I could stand to live in such a dump.  To me it wasn't a dump, it was our home and my son and I were together.

Like this morning, I still think of that little apartment.  At those times if I close my eyes and let my mind wonder, I can almost imagine still being there.

Ruggedness and Spitfire

I swore to myself and to others that I would never get married again.  Spinster-Ville was a resort for me. 

I viewed men as friends but never as companions.  I had three grown boys, their families, and not to forget my dog and cat if I felt the need to talk to someone besides myself.  Other than that, I felt content with my own company.

Fast forward seven years later…

The day Tom and I recited our marriage vows we had known each other a little over a month.  We met online and got together later that night over a drink.  From that first date, we spent all our free time together.

I must say, he fascinates me.  Never had I met a straight shooter with such ruggedness and spitfire.  He tells it as he sees it.  I can tell some get offended but I think it’s HOT.

I feel so lucky to have met Tom.  He has become my best friend and I will love him forever.

Impatiently Waiting

"We have only been waiting a half hour". This is what I typed and sent from my iPhone to my impatient husband after he called out, "I'll give him just one more hour before I walk out of here". I certainly don't blame him. Who likes to sit in a doctors busy waiting room for any length of time. I sent him the note to calm him a little and to give him some piece of mind. It certainly doesn't improve your mood either when others inside the stuffy hot room are also calling out their impatience as well. The only plus side to that is the conversation that strikes up between those who are tired of waiting does kill about twenty minutes of wait time.

My husband, who had shoulder surgery was sent to this Orthopedic Surgeon by Workman's Comp after falling prey to a County Snow Plow. He was putting chains on his work truck and he barely had time to jump out of the way as the snow plow came barreling down towards him. The fall caused him to suffer multiple injuries but his quick thinking possibly saved his life.

Every time we visit the surgeons office, which because of a staff infection has brought us here every week lately, we are informed as always that the doctor is behind schedule. After giving her our usual dirty look, we shuffle over to an empty chair to wait our turn. As soon as we sit down I look around at the faces of those waiting to try and guess just how long our wait will be this time.

I don't mind waiting on a doctor when he is truly behind schedule, but to wait on a doctor that being behind, is his schedule, irritates me to no end.

Today was not a good day for Tom and I, we had a two hour wait.   We are finally going home. Tom is upset. What's worse, doc says he wants to see Tom in two weeks.

A Quiet Night

Since marrying Tom six months ago I have not had much time to myself.  Tonight, he is over at a good friend's house fixing my car.  It's too quiet here at home.  I wish I was there.
